Believe it or not, the best time to start planning for lawn care maintenance is between the last two weeks of February and the first two weeks of March. Whether you treat your lawn yourself or with regular service by a lawn care company, your lawn needs you just as much as you need your lawn.

What Is Lawn Care?

To understand lawn care we must understand the key components of a typical lawn. The lawn is made up of grass (seeds) and dirt (soil). For the seeds of the grass to grow it needs water, sunlight, and oxygen. Simply put, lawn care is much more than mowing the lawn. It’s a checklist to timely aerate, routinely fertilize, regularly irrigate, and frequently maintain. Each of these components within the checklist is crucial to the vitality and vibrance of your lawn. Let’s break down each of the actions you can take to turn your lawn into a masterpiece.

Aeration

You know those dirt clods you see on the ground in the spring and fall? They’re made from an Aerator. The main purpose of an aerator is to perforate the soil and give your grass access to vital ingredients such as oxygen, water, and nutrients at the root level. The added benefit of aerating your lawn is to prevent soil compaction. Compaction can be detrimental to the health of the grass because the roots can be severed from its vital ingredients. To avoid unhealthy soil, you’ll want to timely aerate your lawn at least twice per year. Once in the beginning of the lawn care season between March and April. The second time at the end of the season between September and October.

Fertilization

Fertilizer is the little yellow-white seeds you see on the grass. This is known as giving the lawn nutrients to strengthen the roots and the surrounding soil. It’s similar to taking multivitamins but for lawn care. Without fertilizer, crabgrass will become more prevalent and harder to eliminate. Throughout the season, it’s recommended to routinely fertilize four times a season with a distance of about two months between each fertilization.

Irrigation

The main difference between a healthy and dead lawn is the color variation. Green is good, yellow or brown is bad. If your lawn is brown and dirt is visible, you’ll need to start from scratch. The best way to revitalize grass is to start watering it regularly. In some areas, once per day will suffice. Meanwhile, in other locations, the lawn will need to be watered up three times per day.

Lawn Maintenance

Once the grass has its vital ingredients and three of the four parts of the checklist are completed, the lawn will start to grow. At that time you’ll need to decide when to frequently maintain the lawn. There is an ideal frequency of lawn maintenance. But let’s walk through each of them. Most people mow the lawn weekly, some bi-weekly, and others monthly. If you decide to do it monthly, get ready to bring out the weed-whacker. If chosen to mow it bi-weekly, be prepared to sharpen the blade of your mower every few months, or the lawn could suffer for it. Our recommendation is to maintain the lawn weekly because it protects the grass, preserves the lawnmower blade, and keeps the lawn looking clean and fresh.
